The oncology surgeons at Georgia Cancer Center are experienced in performing surgeries that can diagnose and treat many kinds of cancers. They are skilled in the advanced techniques used for both routine and complex surgical removal of malignant and benign tumors. Surgery can be part of your individualized treatment plan and can also include chemotherapy, radiation or other targeted therapies.

With the advanced technology of the daVinci robotic surgical system, the surgical oncology team at the Georgia Cancer Center is often able to perform surgeries using a minimally invasive approach. Our Center for Advanced Robotic Surgery offers the largest, most experienced, team of robotic surgeons in the region. Specialized fellowship-trained physicians provide expert minimally invasive cancer procedures for:

• Gynecological surgery
• Urogynecology surgery
• Urology surgery
• Thyroid surgery
• Otolaryngology (ENT), or skull base surgery

Each procedure is tailored to our patient, surgical oncologists working together with a diverse multidisciplinary cancer team to diagnose and treat all types of cancer.

Breast Cancer

Surgery can be performed to diagnose and treat breast cancers. Diagnostic testing includes:

• Sentinel lymph node biopsy

When cancer is detected, we use oncoplastic techniques to improve cosmetic outcome, including skin-sparing or nipple-sparing mastectomy with immediate reconstruction by our plastic surgeons for:

• Lumpectomy
• Mastectomy

Gastrointestinal Cancer

Minimally invasive surgery can be performed for some intestinal cancers, including stomach, small intestine, large intestine, pancreas or liver cancers using NanoKnife™ surgery, a precise, cellular level treatment for procedures such as:

• Hepatobiliary surgery
• Pancreatectomy
• Liver tumor ablation

Thoracic Cancer

We perform surgical removal of cancerous tumors in the:

• Lungs
• Mediastinal lymph nodes
• Esophagus

Skin Cancers

We do wide local excision of skin cancers, with plastic surgery closure, if necessary. We also use surgical procedures to check for spread of cancers with:

• Sentinel lymph node biopsy
• Melanoma and non-melanoma removal

Sarcoma

A broad term for cancers of the bone and soft tissues, sarcoma can affect the:

• Muscles
• Nerves
• Fibrous tissues
• Connective tissues (tendons, cartilage)
