Updated COVID-19 guidelines
AU Health is updating its visitation policy, we are now following guidelines for
Low Rate COVID-19 in the Augusta area:
- No support persons with patients with COVID-19 while on active precautions.
- Families, partners in care, and guests are welcome 24 hours a day according to patient
preference, no mask required (or staff PPE as required by the infection prevention
plan).
- Hand hygiene required upon entering the facility and all patient care areas.
- No limitations on in-person gatherings/meetings.
We also welcome one family member or support person to accompany a patient in both the medical center and children's hospital during the pandemic. Ways to stay safe.

If you're experiencing fever, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea, call the COVID-19 hotline 706-721-1852 or complete a virtual screening.
Visitation Reminders
- For the protection of all children, plan visits by young children ahead of schedule with the nursing staff.
- Children or any guests with colds, coughs, diarrhea or other contagious illnesses should remain home until they are well.
- Children and adults who have been exposed to contagious diseases, such as chicken pox, must talk with the nurse before visiting.
- The preferred number of visitors in a child’s room is two per patient, although special arrangements can be made to accommodate more visitors.

Children under age 13 may visit after the nurse completes a form. To protect our sick children, visiting children and siblings must be up-to-date with their immunizations and must not have been sick within the last 48 hours.
Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) provides the highest level of care for children and families. You may be with your child 24 hours a day in the PICU. Due to limited space, only two individuals should visit at a time unless special needs arise. For the safety of your child and other children in the unit, anyone wanting to enter the PICU should first call the unit by using the intercom outside the door. Parents and guests must wash their hands before entering a child’s room.
Several sleep rooms are provided in the pediatric intensive care unit as well as recliners at the PICU patients’ bedsides for your comfort. Lockers are also available for your convenience to store personal items. Additional family areas are on the fourth and fifth floors.
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provides the highest level of care for premature, sick infants and their families. As family members, you may be with your baby 24 hours a day. For the comfort of other families and babies, two individuals may visit at a time. If siblings visit your hospitalized child, immunizations must be up-to-date and verified for children under age 6. Upon entering the NICU, everyone must wash their hands for three minutes before touching the baby. If an emergency arises, family and friends may be asked to leave the room to provide space for emergency equipment and staff.
