About

Children’s Hospital of Georgia was the pioneer of the Southeast’s first ECMO program back in 1985. Since then, our team has cared for hundreds of infants and children. Today, we continue to be one of the only hospitals in Georgia to provide ECMO therapy.

At CHOG, ECMO is available 24/7, and is run by teams of highly trained critical care medicine specialists in either our NICU or PICU, depending on the age and diagnosis of each patient.  Our teams are able to care for up to 4 patients simultaneously who require this intense, lifesaving therapy. 

Our Approach

ECMO can be stressful for the families of sick children, but as practitioners of patient-and family-centered care, we'll take the time to explain the program, tell you how ECMO works, and go over the benefits versus possible complications. As a team, we are available to answer questions and help patients and families understand every aspect of their child's treatment.

The team at the Children’s Hospital of Georgia is not only unique in the state, but has also continuously earned the Gold Award for Excellence in Life Support from the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) since 2006.

U.S. News and World Report and Parents magazine recognizes the ELSO Award as criteria for top pediatric hospitals.
