Our Approach

Respiratory therapists work throughout Children's Hospital of Georgia, in our clinics, and in our pulmonary function testing (PFT ) lab. We team-up with doctors and surgeons to provide breathing assistance to emergency and critical care patients in the neonatal and pediatric intensive care units

We are trained to use the most advanced equipment and therapies available to provide a continuum of care to all children from newborns up to age 21.

We are registered respiratory therapists certified in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Neonatal Resuscitation (NPR) on call 24/7 to provide:

  • Emergency care for children with severe breathing problems, respiratory disease and trauma, including Intubation and airway replacement
  • High-risk birth and infant ventilation services in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU)
  • Neonatal and Pediatric ECMO (Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) for critically ill babies and children
  • Postsurgical care, and pneumonia prevention for children after major surgery
  • Ventilation services, using special therapeutic gases such as nitric oxide and heliox

Care for chronic breathing disorders

We provide education and ventilation services for pediatric patients suffering from congenital or acquired breathing disorders such as:

  • Asthma: We treat patients using proven protocols and use our expertise to educate families on how to manage asthma care at home.
  • Cystic fibrosis: We provide comprehensive care and education to patients and their families who are dealing with cystic fibrosis.
  • Neuromuscular disorders: We work with neuromuscular patients with the overall goal of keeping the lungs clear and open.

Whether your child is already in the hospital or on their way to us, respiratory therapists are part of the medical teams getting your child to where they need to be. We are part of the:

  • Neonatal and pediatric transport teams: We provide breathing support for ill and injured children while in transit to CHOG.
  • Pediatric Evaluation Team (PET): We are available 24/7 to quickly evaluate the breathing of inpatients.
