Pediatric Minimally Invasive Surgery

Our Approach

Children, especially infants, present special challenges in pediatric surgery. Because of their smaller size they react differently to surgical procedures than adults.

This challenge has motivated the Children’s Hospital of Georgia to open the area’s only Minimally Invasive Surgery Center for Children outside of Atlanta offering cutting edge surgical care to pediatric patients in Georgia, South Carolina and the Southeast. Advanced minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is performed in our Pediatric Endosuite, using laparoscopic and thoracoscopic procedures, and can mean better outcomes for our smallest patients who might need:

  • Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery
  • Digestive Tract Surgery
  • Heart Surgery
  • Kidney Transplant
  • Neurosurgery
  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Urologic Surgery

Benefits of Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) in Children

Our pediatric MIS surgical specialists perform the most sophisticated operations in children through tiny “peepholes” instead of large incisions, resulting in shorter recovery and less pain.

In fact, minimally invasive surgery may offer benefits to children such as:

  • Less pain
  • Less scarring
  • Faster recovery
  • Less injury to tissue
  • Reduced blood loss
  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Quicker return to school and activities

The region’s only high-tech Pediatric Endosuite

The Pediatric Endosuite’s equipment is ceiling-mounted and operated by a central computer.  The equipment consists of tiny telescopes that can view the inside of a patient’s body. These telescopes are connected to sophisticated monitors that allow surgeons to see interior structures more clearly and at a larger size. The monitors are mobile, allowing the Operating Room staff to adjust them as needed during the surgery.  The number, and orientation, of the monitors means that surgeons have a comfortable view, from every angle, to guide them safely through your child’s surgery.

Many pediatric surgical conditions are treated with minimally invasive surgery including:

  • Appendicitis
  • Adrenalectomy
  • Gallstones
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease
  • Evaluation of inguinal Hernia
  • Pyloric stenosis
  • Undescended testicles
