care delivery where patients benefit from the high standards of academic medicine.
Our patients experience holistic health and wellness through preventive care. Patients
will also have access to the right care team and location – at the right time to improve
patient satisfaction.
Patient Safety
As an academic medical center, Augusta University Health provides routine or standard
patient care, but also cares for those who are extremely ill and are severely injured.
Hospitals throughout Georgia and surrounding states will transfer patients to Augusta
University Medical Center because we have the services, technology and facilities
available to care for these patients.
When we evaluate our patient care and our patient safety we compare ourselves to other
academic medical centers from across the United States through our participation in
the University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC). UHC is a cooperative of academic health
centers. Within the UHC our Children's Hospital of Georgia routinely ranks in the
top ten percent on pediatric safety measures reported by UHC and the medical center
steadily improves its rank among the other UHC hospitals.
Quality patient care is about how we achieve superior outcomes of care and high patient
satisfaction by consistently delivering superior services and advanced treatments
in a way that best meets individual patients needs and expectations.
Patient safety is integrated with quality patient care to keep our patients safe from
avoidable harm while receiving superior healthcare at Augusta University Medical Center.
We take a multi-disciplinary approach and communicate effectively with our comprehensive
team as well as with each of our patients and their family members. We are able to
to adjust treatment plans, as needed, for improved outcomes.
Staff continuously participate in ongoing projects to improve our patient safety and
quality. These projects for the hospital are initiated by the Quality Unit Councils
(nursing units), the Quality Department Councils or the Quality Operational Council.
Speak Up
Making Healthcare Safer for Augusta University Medical Center Patients
You are the most important member of your healthcare team, so your participation is
encouraged in decisions about your treatment.
- If you are coming for an outpatient appointment, bring a list of questions to ask
your doctor and write down the answers. If you are hospitalized, ask your nurse to
go over each day's plan of care.
- Keep copies of your medical records from past hospitalizations and share those with
your caregivers.
- Don’t be afraid to ask for a second opinion.
- We encourage you to speak up. Our “Speak Up” campaign encourages you to take a more
active role in your healthcare by speaking up if you have questions or concerns and
if your doctor or nurse does something that doesn’t seem quite right.
Speak up if you have concerns. If you don’t understand something, ask again. It is
your body, and you have the right to know.
Pay attention to the care you receive. Make sure you get the right treatments and medications
from the right health professionals. Do not assume anything.
Educate yourself about your diagnosis, the medical tests you are undergoing and your
treatment plan.
Ask a trusted family member or friend to serve as your advocate.
Know what medications you take and why you take them.
Use a facility like Medical Center, which has undergone a rigorous on-site quality
and safety evaluation.
Participate in all decisions about your treatment.
Hand Hygiene
Hand Hygiene is a primary patient safety issue and one that Augusta University Health
has been routinely monitoring our compliance since 2008. Since implementing this monitoring
program, our compliance rates have steadily improved through the education of our
patients, families and staff. Current compliance rates, including weekend observance,
are now consistently in the 90th percentile.
Each nursing unit’s hand hygiene rates are shared in the monthly Quality Unit Council
dashboards. The staff is able to review the data and make improvements to consistently
be at or above 90% compliance.
Patient Satisfaction
What Our Patients Think Matters Most
We spend a lot of time researching and finding out from patients what is important
to them. We consistently conduct surveys to identify ways we can improve the quality
of care. Augusta University Health partners with Press Ganey Associates, Inc. to create
a high-performance enterprise that is experientially, clinically, operationally and
financially strong. Press Ganey’s comprehensive portfolio of health care performance
solutions has helped us improve our quality and operate more efficiently.
It is our goal to continue transforming our health system through innovative data
collection, insights and analysis to improve clinical, operational, financial and
experiential outcomes.
We also bring together our key metrics in a single, integrated view of performance
to enable alignment and accountability across our enterprise. This gives us the confidence
to improve care based on proven best practices and to achieve clinical performance
excellence. As we continue to improve, we encourage patients of our health system
to complete and return Press Ganey surveys they receive after their discharge.
