What is Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH)?

NPH usually affects older patients and is caused by the build-up of fluid on the brain. This pressure can cause damage to the brain; symptoms include:

• Trouble walking 
• Incontinence and urination problems
• Mild symptoms of dementia

In the past, NPH has often been overlooked or dismissed without treatment because of the difficulty in accurately diagnosing the condition and the thought that neurosurgical intervention puts patients at higher risk.
