Why Choose Us
Pregnancy can be hard on a women's body, especially their heart. The increased workload
of carrying a baby can cause high blood pressure, weakening of the heart, or worsening
of underlying heart problems (including valve abnormalities). If this happens, AU
Health's cardio-obstetrics team is here to support you through your pregnancy, delivery,
and recovery.
Your care team includes an obstetrician and a cardiologist, working together to create
an optimal care and delivery plan for you and your baby.
Our Approach
Heart conditions during pregnancy
When you are pregnant, there are signs that can indicate you have (or have developed)
a heart condition. If you experience any of the following symptoms, please call your
obstetrician or cardiologist.
- High blood pressure
- Increased shortness of breath
- Swollen legs
- Racing heart rate
- Feeling faint (like you could pass out)
How we care for you
Our priority is the health of you and your baby. During pregnancy, we'll monitor your
heart condition closely. If needed, medications to treat high blood pressure and/or
heart failure will be given to reduce your symptoms. The team will continue to monitor
you and assist in coordinating the best time for delivery.
What happens after delivery?
Your cardiac condition will be monitored (as needed) after delivery by your cardiologist.
If it resolves, then you will be able to return to life as normal. If not, further
steps will be taken to care for your condition.
Our team will also help you safely plan for future pregnancies or assist with contraception
needs.
