Cancer Treatments
AU Health is at the forefront of innovative research to find cures for childhood cancers.
Patients are seen and treated at our Inpatient Pediatric Cancer Unit.
Cancer treatments can be one or a combination of the following:
- Infusions: The systemic introduction of drugs or radioactive infusions are often used to destroy
cancer cells. They can be used alone or in conjunction with other therapies and surgeries.
These include chemotherapy and immunotherapy administered at our Infusion Center.
- Surgery: Depending on the stage and type of cancer, and health of the patient, we can perform
a variety of procedures, including non-invasive surgury, done at the Radiation Therapy Center, minimally invasive and traditional surgeries. Procedures we do include:
- Gamma knife surgery
- External beam radiation therapy
- Minimally invasive surgery
- Cardiothoracic surgery
- Head and neck surgery
Pediatric Blood Disorders
Our center also diagnoses and treats children with disorders that affect red blood
cells, white blood cells, and platelets.
Pediatric Hematology Programs
Families from across the Southeastern United States travel to CHOG to take part in
comprehensive treatment programs for children. These include:
- Hemophilia and Thrombophilia: For children with hemophilia and other bleeding and clotting disorders.
- Sickle Cell Disease: We offer a comprehensive Sickle Cell Disease Program dedicated to children with
sickle cell, thalassemia, and other hemoglobinopathies.
Blood Disorder Treatment Centers and Clinics
We offer specialized care for blood disorders in our dedicated treatment centers.
Your child will be seen at:
- Outpatient Clinic and Day Infusion Center: To reduce the number of admissions to the hospital, our Infusion Center (located
in the Medical Office Building) allows patients to receive chemotherapy and blood transfusions in an outpatient
setting.[**It appears as though this center is different from the Infusion Center in the GCC.
If so, how do we make sure there is no confusion as to where patients go for hemophilia
treatment?]
Patient Resources
Throughout treatment and recovery, we are here to support our patients and their families
in every way, providing:
- Clinical support: With medical social workers and registered pediatric dietitians.
- Child life specialists: To help children understand and cope with their illness.
- Share and Care weekends: For newly diagnosed cancer patients and their families.
Camps for our kids!
How do we get our patients to participate in these camps? Do we organize it for the
family or are we just giving them the links to the camps?
- Camp Rainbow - Summer camp for children with cancer.
- Camp Wannaklot: Summer camp for children who have hemophilia or other inherited bleeding disorders.
Make-a-Wish
Children's Hospital of Georgia is proud to work with the Make-a-Wish Foundation to offer pediatric patients with cancer (or any other life-threatening condition)
the ability to have their dreams come true.
