Internships at Volunteer Services

Internships

Internships are a great way to gain valuable knowledge and hands on experience with the opportunity to earn academic credit.

Augusta University internships now require direct departmental requests. Departmental requests may be sent directly to volunteers@augusta.edu for any student interested in a non-clinical, unpaid internship at AU.

If you are not an Augusta University student seeking an internship, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) must be completed between our legal department and the attending university or college of the student prior to onboarding.

  • Internships are open to any undergraduate or graduate students associated with a college or university that are 18 years of age or older.
  • We only provide non-clinical internship experiences. This does not include shadowing, observing, clinicals, or practicums.

Typically, internships are one semester in length and provide hands on experience in the field of interest. Many academic departments offer credit-based internship programs that may count as an elective or requirement in the curriculum. Students should select internships based on their desired experience and career interests.

Looking for experience?

Here are your options:

Internship - Internships are typically one-time work or service experiences related to the student's major and/or career goal. The internship plan generally involves students working in professional settings under the supervision and monitoring of practicing professionals. Internships can be paid or unpaid, and the student may or may not receive academic credit for performing the internship.

Shadowing/Observership – Observing a professional or more experienced employee preform certain work related tasks in order to gain a better understanding of their role within an organization.

The Office of Volunteer Services & Community Engagement does not provide opportunities for individuals to shadow or observe. Those desiring to participate in an observership must be recommended by an AUMC manager or medical staff member. He/she must be approved by the department director or clinical service chief of the department where the observership will take place, and the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) or his/her designee. The person who is supervising the observer is responsible for fulfilling the provisions of this policy and contacting the CMO’s office for implementation of the approval process. For additional information, please email Mary Tipton at mtipton@augusta.edu.

Volunteering - Volunteering for a non-profit organization is a less structured and less formal way to develop important career preparation skills and contacts. Volunteering is time willingly given for the common good and without academic or financial gain.
