Dr. Homlar is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon specializing in orthopaedic oncology and joint replacement. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Georgia, earned her medical degree at the Medical College of Georgia, completed her orthopaedic surgery residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN and stayed for a fellowship in orthopaedic oncology. She returned to the Medical College of Georgia in 2012 to join the faculty in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Her practice is focused on the treatment of bone and soft tissue sarcomas, metastatic disease and adult joint reconstruction. Sarcoma is a rare type of cancer that arises in bones and connective tissues (such as muscle, fat, nerve, blood vessels) that requires multidisciplinary care at a center with experience and expertise in sarcoma treatment. This multidisciplinary team includes orthopaedic oncologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, musculoskeletal radiologists, pathologists, surgical oncologists, plastic surgeons, vascular surgeons, among others. Surgical treatment of a sarcoma aims to remove the cancer while preserving as much limb function as possible. Surgical treatment of metastatic disease (cancer that has spread to bone) and pathologic fractures (breaks in bone weakened by cancer) aims to decrease pain and improve quality of life. Treatment of bone sarcomas oftentimes involves complex joint replacement, and Dr. Homlar has extensive experience with joint replacement in the setting of cancer, but also with the more common causes for joint degeneration (osteoarthritis, inflammatory arthropathies, osteonecrosis, trauma, and previous infection).
