Menopause and Perimenopause

For women, menopause is a wake-up call, the symptoms alone can make life very difficult. If you haven’t done so already, now is the time to get serious about healthy aging. The Perimenopause and Menopause Program at Augusta University Health is the only program of it's kind in our area dedicated to improving and supporting women through this next stage of life.

About

Menopause happens when you stop menstruating due to the reduction of hormone levels in your body - it's a big change for some women. There is also a stage leading up to menopause, called perimenopause, that often begins in your 40s and can last an average of four years. Women can experience physical and mental changes during these years but don’t relate them to menopause because they think they are too young.

Symptoms include, but are not limited to:

  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Mood swings
  • Sexual problems
  • Irregular periods

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, schedule a mid-life check-up at AU Health. Our Perimenopause and Menopause Program is the only program of its kind in the area with NAMS Certified Menopause Providers (NCMP).

You’ll meet with a Certified Midlife Health provider who will help you through this difficult time by providing:

  • Holistic assessments of your health
  • Answers to your questions about menopause and healthy aging
  • Options to manage the symptoms of menopause and perimenopause, including Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT).
  • Preventive approaches to osteoporosis, heart disease, breast health, stress and incontinence.
  • Referrals to other Augusta University Health specialists, including:
    • urogynecology
    • pelvic floor physical therapy
    • endocrinology specialists

Women's Health offers a Menopause Clinic on Thursday mornings at Grovetown II with Dr. Allen, Director of Menopause & Midlife Health.
